For complaints during pregnancy

You do not have to wait until shortly before the birth. For many complaints, acupuncture can be used as a supportive measure — at any point in your pregnancy:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sleep problems, exhaustion, inner restlessness
  • Back, head and sciatic pain
  • Water retention
  • Carpal tunnel symptoms
  • Heartburn

How often and over what period we treat depends on your complaints. We discuss that at the first appointment.

To prepare for the birth

From 36 completed weeks of pregnancy we usually treat once a week until the birth. Four sessions are the common frame. Starting later is possible.

The last weeks of a pregnancy are exciting and sometimes exhausting. Acupuncture gives you one fixed appointment a week where you have to do nothing but lie down and breathe.

Postpartum and breastfeeding

Acupuncture can also be used as a supportive measure after the birth — for questions around milk supply, blocked ducts, recovery, constipation, or when your mood swings.

How a session works

We talk briefly about how you are and what is on your mind. Then you lie down comfortably; the needles stay in for about 20 minutes. Plan for half an hour in total.

Before the first session we hold an information talk — about the procedure, possible reactions and how often we treat. That is included in the appointment at no extra cost.

We use sterile single-use needles only. You are in a gynaecological practice: if you feel unwell, a doctor is in the building.

Bright treatment room at the practice
Honestly: how well acupuncture works differs by complaint and is unevenly researched. For acupuncture in preparation for birth the evidence is mixed — some studies find an effect, others do not. We tell you openly what the data says about your concern. What we can promise: a calm, well-accompanied half hour and a method that has been in use for a long time and is well tolerated.

Costs

€30 per session. The same for complaints, birth preparation and the postpartum period. The information talk at the first appointment is included. Each session is billed individually; there are no packages.

You pay the first appointment on site by card. Follow-up appointments can be paid online when booking or at reception. If you need to cancel: free of charge up to 48 hours before. After that we keep the amount — unless your baby arrives early or there is a medical reason, in which case we refund without question.

Acupuncture by a midwife is an individual health service and not covered by German statutory health insurance. You receive a private invoice. One tip: many insurers hold an annual budget for complementary medicine and reimburse such invoices in full or in part. Ask them before you start.

Frequent questions about acupuncture

Does it hurt?

The needles are very fine. When they are placed you usually feel a brief pulling or a sensation of warmth, and after that as a rule nothing at all.

When can I start?

For complaints at any point in your pregnancy. For birth preparation from 36 completed weeks.

How many sessions do I need?

For birth preparation usually four. For complaints it depends on the issue — often several at weekly intervals. After the first appointments we look together at whether it is worth continuing.

Are there side effects?

Rarely small bruises at the puncture site, occasionally tiredness after the session. Circulatory reactions occur, which is why we treat you lying down.

When is acupuncture not possible?

In pregnancy with preterm labour, bleeding or placenta praevia. Generally with clotting disorders, while taking blood-thinning medication, with acute infections or skin changes at the treatment sites. We clarify this in the preliminary talk.

I am not pregnant — do you offer this too?

Not at present. Our acupuncture is for pregnant women and for women in the postpartum and breastfeeding period.

Is it covered for chronic back or knee pain?

There acupuncture is a statutory insurance benefit — but not within our specialty. For that please turn to your GP or an orthopaedic practice.
