Antenatal care
From the first examination to birth: the German maternity guidelines define what insurance covers — and that is more than many think. Here is the complete roadmap.
What insurance covers completely
Statutory antenatal care is comprehensive: all regular check-ups (every four weeks until week 32, then every two), three basic ultrasounds (weeks 9–12, 19–22, 29–32), blood tests (blood group, antibodies, infection serology, blood count), urine checks, blood pressure, weight, CTG as needed, gestational diabetes screening (weeks 24–28) plus counselling on nutrition, vaccinations and lifestyle.
Added to this are tests for HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis, chlamydia — and NIPT for trisomies as an insured service in justified cases, after counselling, not as an automatism.
The rhythm — and who looks after you
- Weeks 5–8: confirmation, first consultation, maternity record, first blood sample
- Weeks 9–12: 1st basic ultrasound — heartbeat, age, position
- Weeks 19–22: 2nd basic ultrasound — on request with extended organ assessment by a correspondingly qualified examiner
- Weeks 24–28: glucose test, anti-D prophylaxis if applicable
- Weeks 29–32: 3rd basic ultrasound — growth, position, placenta
- From week 32: fortnightly, CTG as needed; around the due date closely
Your check-ups can also alternate between us and a midwife — that is your right, and we actively cooperate with midwives instead of competing.
Honestly: what you do not need
A lot is sold around pregnancy. So, clearly: guideline care is medically complete. Additional ultrasounds, 3D images or extended blood tests are elective with an unremarkable course — some sensible depending on the situation, none obligatory. For every extra we tell you price and honest benefit beforehand — and saying no is completely fine.
Frequent questions about antenatal care
Do I need a referral?
No. With a positive test simply call or book online — confirming the pregnancy is the first appointment.
Can I combine care between doctor and midwife?
Yes, alternating — both document in the same maternity record. Only the ultrasounds stay with us. We expressly support this.
What if I miss an appointment?
Just get in touch — we catch it up promptly. The intervals are guide values, not a rigid corset; continuity is what matters.
When do I get the maternity record?
At the first check-up after the pregnancy is confirmed. We keep it digitally in parallel — so it cannot get lost.
