Young patients · ages 12–18

First appointment with the gynecologist.

For young women, mothers and fathers: a self-check with six questions — when does the first appointment make sense?

The first gynecology appointment is not suddenly „here". For some it comes at 13 because their period causes problems. For others at 17 before their first relationship. For others at 19 to catch up on HPV vaccination. There is no „too early" or „too late" — only the right timing for each individual situation.

We take time for the first contact. No pressure, no mandatory examination. The first appointment is about getting to know each other, clarifying questions, possibly palpation or ultrasound — all voluntary, at your own pace. An accompanying person (mother, sister, friend) is welcome, not required.

The self-check below gives an initial orientation. For specific complaints, contraception questions, or when the daughter wants to bring up her own topics: call directly — we find a suitable appointment.

What we offer

Three focus areas for young patients.

First conversation — getting to know each other without examination

We talk — about the body, the period, what is currently on your mind. If nothing acute is going on, this first appointment requires no examination at all. The patient sets the pace.

HPV vaccination — covered by insurance until age 18

HPV vaccination protects against cervical cancer and is a statutory benefit until the 18th birthday. We vaccinate directly in the practice, no extra appointment needed. Filling out the information form can be done in advance.

Contraception counseling — when the topic comes up

Pill, pill questionnaire, IUD, hormone-free — we know all options and advise honestly, not by template. Contraception & IUD for details.

Frequently asked

What parents and young women often ask.

At what age should my daughter see the gynecologist?

Classically between 14 and 17 years for a first meeting — but this is not a hard rule. With severe menstrual pain, very irregular cycle, before sexual activity, or for the HPV vaccination it can make sense earlier. With no complaints, age 18 is still within range.

Does the first appointment require an examination?

No. The first contact can be pure conversation. We talk, clarify questions, maybe look at the abdomen during palpation — a vaginal examination is almost never necessary at the first appointment. If indicated (e.g. suspicion of a cyst), we explain everything beforehand and decide together.

Can an accompanying person come into the consultation room?

Yes, gladly. Mother, father, older sister, friend — whoever provides security is welcome. By the second or third appointment, many patients decide to come alone. Both are OK.

What about very severe menstrual pain?

Call us directly. „Missing school because of cramps" is not a normal condition — we examine causes: endometriosis, hormonal imbalance, cysts. Early diagnosis is important here. An appointment within 2 weeks is usually possible.

What does the first contact cost?

With statutory insurance: free, with the insurance card. With private insurance it goes through private billing — no self-pay model needed for the first contact. Details with the appointment booking.

Are the conversations confidential, even from parents?

Yes, medical confidentiality applies also towards parents — given medical understanding capacity of the patient (usually from age 14–16). What the patient wants to discuss in confidence stays between us. Parents are informed when very serious topics arise — we explain this clearly beforehand.
