Transvaginal ultrasound
The view of uterus and ovaries: unbeatable for clarifying symptoms — and with honest limits as pure cancer screening. Both deserve to be said.
What transvaginal ultrasound shows
The vaginal probe delivers high-resolution images of the uterus, its lining and the ovaries. We detect fibroids, polyps, cysts, endometrial changes and assess unclear bleeding or pain. For fertility planning it shows follicle growth and lining build-up — with an IUD, its correct position.
The examination is not painful, takes a few minutes and is part of the normal gynaecological examination.
The honest part: ovarian cancer "screening"
Here we are deliberately more reserved than some brochures: for ultrasound as ovarian cancer screening in symptom-free women without risk factors there is no proven benefit. Large trials show it does not measurably reduce mortality but produces false positives — up to unnecessary surgery. The German IGeL-Monitor rates it negatively, and we do not conceal that assessment just because we offer the examination.
- Sensible: with symptoms, unclear bleeding, pain, for follow-up of known findings, with family history after counselling
- To be viewed critically: as yearly ovarian "cancer screening" without any indication
- If you choose it as part of EXTENDED/ALL-ROUND, you know exactly what you get — and what not
Bleeding after menopause: always investigate
One clear exception to all restraint: any bleeding after more than a year without periods must be investigated promptly — here transvaginal ultrasound of the lining is the method of choice and of course covered. Usually the cause is harmless, but we verify that rather than assume it.
Frequent questions about transvaginal ultrasound
Why do you offer something you yourselves classify critically?
Because with symptoms and for follow-up the examination is indispensable — only as indication-free cancer screening is its benefit unproven. We separate the two cleanly instead of packing both into one brochure. You decide informed.
Is the examination possible if I have never had intercourse?
Then we examine through the abdominal wall — somewhat less detailed but meaningful. Just say so beforehand; that is completely normal.
Can ultrasound see endometriosis?
Partly: endometriomas on the ovaries and deep lesions often yes, superficial lesions mostly not. A normal ultrasound does not rule out endometriosis — the symptoms count.
How often should fibroids be checked?
Symptom-free, stable fibroids: about yearly. Growing or symptomatic ones more closely — we define that individually and write it down for you.

Ask your questionSymptoms, or simply peace of mind?
With symptoms: appointment, insurance pays. For screening: we honestly explain beforehand what the examination can deliver — then you decide.
